Down By the River

If you are looking for a festive place to celebrate the season-formal or casual, inside or out-you won’t do much better than a table by the river

ANGELINI ( Italian food.)
2/F, Shangri-la, 89 Soi Wat Suan Plu, New Road, Bangkok
Tel:02-236-7777.

Open daily 11:30am until late, 2:30-6pm, 6-11pm.

The famous Angelini has everything you could ask for: stylish art-deco ambience, five-star service and food that will have you begging for more. This is the perfect spot for entertaining, whether you’re two or 12.

BAAN KLANG NAM ( Thai/Seafood.)
3792/106 Rama 3 Soi 14, Bangkok
Tel:02-292-0175, 02-292-2037-8, 02-689-1969.

Open 11am-11pm.

It’s the combination of the riverside location, huge steaming plates of everything sea-inspired and pleased-to-please-you service that will have you coming back here again and again. A casual spot where everyone’s having fun. Great for large groups of office colleagues or friends.

THE GOODVIEW ( Thai/International food.)
2525 Chareon Krung Road. Bangkok
Tel: 02-689-1393-7.

Open daily 5pm-1am.

With a name like Good View, you would expect the restaurant to offer, of course, a “good” view. And with the original branch being quite popular in Chiang Mai, you would expect the food to be nothing but “good”. Well, things are definitely “good” as the restaurant is always packed and the band is always jamming.

JESTER’S ( Fusion food.)
Peninsula, 333 Charoen Nakorn Road. Bangkok
Tel: 02-861-2888.

Open daily 6-10pm.

Offering one of the best views of the river, this posh hotel restaurant with its exciting menu will definitely put you in the mood for a celebration. On offer are all fresh combinations of everything that makes dining out a pleasure. Food is beautifully presented.

KHINLOM-CHOM-SA-PHAN ( Thai food.)
11/6 Samsan Soi 3, Samsan Road. Bangkok
Tel: 02-628-8382.

Open daily 10am-2am.

Indeed, it’s breezy and there’s a view of Rama 8 Bridge at this popular restaurant. Through it’s deep in a soi (small road), you can park at the temple and a golf cart will transport you to the cook shack. The food is excellent, as is the service. Khinlom is hidden gem; we just wish it wasn’t hidden so deeply.

MEI JIANG ( Cantonese Chinese food.)
Peninsula, 333 Charoen Nakorn Road. Bangkok
Tel: 02-861-2888.

Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6-10:30pm.

The elegant establishment overlooking the Chao Phraya River offers dim sum so succulent you can just keep on eating, basket after basket. There is even a cool display of tea on the counter and specially trained staff to prepare your own mini tea ceremony.

LE NORMANDIE ( French food.)
5/F, Oriental, 48 Oriental Ave. Bangkok
Tel: 02-659-9000.

Open daily Mon-Sat noon-2:30pm, 7-10pm, Sun 7-10pm.

Looking for a place to spend that holiday bonus? Look no further than what is arguably one of the city’s top restaurants. The hotel may be snooty but we have a love-love relationship with this fine French restaurant overlooking the river. With tasty meat, succulent fish and the glamorous ambiance (it’s the Oriental, after all), it’s ideal for any occasion.

RIVER BAR ( Thai food.)
405/1 Soi Chao Phraya Siam, Rajvithee Road.
Tel: 02-879-1747-8.

Open daily 5pm-1am.

It’s big, it’s loud, and it’s a place where you can pass hours and hours if you enjoy a humming buzz of people and the occasional Kamikaze or two. Live bands play inside the air-conditioned hangar. Diners on the open-air terrace can listen in on the speaker system. Decent food is there to keep you from getting too drunk. Service can be spotty.

SAMSENSOISAM ( Thai food.)
Samsen Soi 3. Bangkok
Tel: 02-628-8362.

Open daily 5pm-midnight.

Enjoy magnificent views of the Rama 7 Bridge while tucking into succulent seafood and snacks perfectly matched to Sang Som cocktails or ice-cold Singha.

SUAN TIP ( Thai food.)
17/9 Sukhaprachasan 2 Road. Pakkred, Nonthaburi.
Tel: 02-583-3748.

Open daily 11am-11pm.

If you are hoping for a change of pace, Suan Thip offers a beautiful setting with outdoorpavillions in the midst of trees, flowers and almost-fresh air (as opposed to the barely-fresh we’re accustomed to), all alongside the river in Nonthaburi. The food is delicious (as is your blood to the mosquitoes, so take some repellent if your heart is set on sitting outside).

SUPATRA RIVER HOUSE ( Thai/seafood.)
226 Soi Wat-Rakang. Bangkok
Tel: 02-411-0305, 02-411-0874, 02-848-9016.

Open daily 11am-2pm, 5:30-10:30pm.

OK, so it’s a bit touristy. But it offers one of the finest settings on the Chao Phraya with an enticing view of the Grand Palace (and Wat Arun if you crane your neck). Catch the special Supatra ferry from Tha Maharaj located in the old town district.

TO-SIT PIER 92 ( Thai food.)
115 Charunsanitwong Soi 92. Bangkok
Tel: 02-879-1717.

Open daily 4pm-1am.

Who would have thought that a dark and dreary soi (small road) would lead to such a bright and bustling two-story eatery? It’s like a different world, with an illuminating glow of white and blue hues exuding from the huge lighthouse-like structure by the river. There’s a sushi bar, but allow the helpful captain to recommend the ultra fast and delicious Thai fare, especially the kaeng som cha-om kai.
