Thailand has flown kites since Sukhothai and Ayudhaya eras from the king to the ordinary man. In Ayudhaya era, Chula and Pakpao kites were invented for the first time and the kite contest was introduced in the Rattanakosin era. His Majesty King Rama II was pleased to fly a Chula kite to fight with a Pakpao kite of his majesty’s younger brother. In the reign of His Majesty King Rama IV, people were permitted to fly kites at Sanamluang and His Majesty King Rama IV also presided over the kite contest at Dusit Hall. In the reign of His Majestic King Rama VI, the kite sport once again was revived. His majesty was pleased to have Phraya Pirompakdee to conduct the kite contest at Sanamluang. After World War II, Siam Sports Club also conducted a kite contest at Sanamluang.

For a decade, the TAT has conducted Thailand and International Kite Contest to preserve and revive this unique national treasure. In the festival, many shows are presented such as 4 part Thailand Kites, Beginning of Rattanakosin Era Thailand Kites, International Kites, International Night Kites, Thailand Kites Exhibition, Chula-Pakpao-Arobatic Kites Contest, Fighting Kites Demonstation, Flat Kites Contest, Creative Kites Invention, Kites Clinic and Fair including artistic activities for children.
