Kanchanaburi is an historically strategic townaround the world for its infamous Death Railway, built by World War II prisoners of war, which spans the Khwae River. Though many visitors come specifically to visit the old railway and nearby Commonwealth Cemetery, many cannot resist the town's charming allure.

The magnificent landscape and charming beauty of Kanchanaburi have resulted in major tourist attractions including several well-known waterfalls, caves which were once inhabited by Neolithic man, pristine national parks, tranquil rivers, virgin forests, and reservoir. Together, they offer an intriguing experience for first-time or repeat visitors. Whether its fishing, rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, bird-watching, star-gazing, golfing, elephant and jungle trekking, or even living in bamboo rafts, Kanchanaburi takes pride in offering them all.

Flowing rivers, vivid gardens and unlimited fresh air surround you in this enormous resort on the banks of the Kwai Yai River, providing a natural sanctuary close to the capital. Pung Waan offers a variety of accommodations including spacious garden view rooms, all of which are at ground level, and river view rooms, in a two-story building right on the river bank. Located 15 kilometers from Kanchanaburi, the Royal River Kwai Resort and Spa is an elegant mix of traditional and contemporary influence. Set on extensive grounds, the resort has many intimate corners with wooden benches tucked under frangipani trees. The 66 rooms, which overlook either the river or the resort’s pool, blend the soft natural elements of local materials with more modern dark wood furniture. There is a mixture of both minimalist artwork and more detailed traditional pieces, including stone murals which decorate the lobby and the Klouadthong Restaurant.

Rustic touches are also apparent in the rooms, with the wash basin being fashioned in the shape of a wooden barrel. The spa invites guests with its lavish decoration featuring local woven fabrics and beautiful decorative pieces reminiscent of a Lanna temple. One of the spa’s signature treatments is the foot massage which is especially memorable for the stunning views from the sun loungers out over the lazy river.

Activities: Local activities include elephant trekking and rafting on the river. Of course, few can resist a visit to the dramatic river valley over which spans the notorious bridge built by many foreign prisoners of war.
