Koh Tao: Dream Destination for Diving & Snorkeling
Koh Tao Beach Map

Koh Tao is one of the major dive sites in Thailand. The abundance of marine life and fertile coral reef that spread over bays and the surrounding islands make Koh Toa the dream destination for both advanced divers and beginners. Even by snorkeling, the beauty of lively fish and their colorful habitats at the shallowest level was enough to make your day.

To explore Koh Toa, you can rent a “Taxi Boat”, a tour service from the main island. And as early as you can get yourself out of bed, your boatman (AKA tour-guide) will take you to each dive sites around Koh Toa, where you can swim with a bunch of fish (and some leech!) or do other beach activities. It’s time to leave when the sun is setting, but make sure that you don’t miss these places before heading back.

Aow Leuk
This bay has become very popular since it can be easily accessed by cars and boats. It is a quality beach with clean water, where you can see coral through water only at your chest height. However, it’s quite crowded; therefore the water is not so clear. So be prepared for lots feet instead of reef!

Aow Leuk
Tanote Bay

Tanote Bay
Here is recommended though the bay is quite narrow with deeper water, it is not so windy and the water is calm and clearer than other bays and beaches. Because the underwater is fruitful with coral and fish, you may see varieties of marine life, including squids!

Hin Wong Bay
At this bay, you can see coral reef (and lots of leech) from beach front. Even with water level about the knee height, you can clearly see a bunch of coral. However, the water is so shallow and you might get scratch by the corals underneath. So, be careful.

Hin Wong Bay
Mango Bay

Mango Bay
It is on the north of Koh Toa, the last dive spot before heading to Koh Nang Yuan. Mango Bay is not crowded since accessibility by cars takes long hour and people mostly travel by boat, so the beach is quiet and clean. The water level is as deep as Aow Leuk, but the corals are down in the deeper spots.

Shark Island
Shark Island is located between Had Thian Oft and Aow Leuk. It is another hot spot and a home to some Whale Shark that you might be lucky to see. So, here is another must!!

Shark Island
Koh Nang Yuan

Koh Nang Yuan
Every boat comes to stop here as the last destination. Koh Nang Yuan consist of three small islands that are connected by the famous sand-dune which bring people to the Gulf of Thailand. You can climb up the hilltop to enjoy the breathtaking view for the gorgeous memoirs. And if you still have energy left for diving, here is the place you must not miss. The calm water is crystal clear, so you can see the underwater village though they live so down deep; especial at the wharf, where you can see them just through the surface.

Tips

  • Boat rental is around 4,000+ baht, so if you have lots of people it is worth it.
  • Don’t forget to buy some buns for fish, so you can see more of them coming toward you.
  • For people who love snorkeling, getting diving mask and snorkel for your own is not a bad idea, because the equipment that can be found from rental boat and resort are very old and not clean. Price range is from 360-450 baht.
  • Beside long-tailed boat, you can also find yacht for more luxury and trendy voyage.
