“Golden Land” is what Suvarnabhumi - pronounced ‘Sue wanna boom' - translates to, and Bangkok’s new airport is set to shine brightly in the competitive world of airport design and usability. The new, ultra modern, airport is located on Bang Na-Trat Highway, in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan Province, about 25 kilometers east of Bangkok. Stretching over some 8,000 acres, the airport boasts the largest single passenger terminal in the world which can comfortably process over 45 million passengers per year.
Suvarnabhumi Airport also features the tallest flight control tower in the world, fully equipped with the most up-to-date air traffic control, navigation, radar, and communications equipment. The airport boasts taxiways, runways and aircraft parking bays capable of handling 76 flight operations per hour. Combining a comprehensive range of world-class services and facilities with security systems of the highest international standard, Suvarnabhumi Airport is ready.
The airport hotel will be built under the “Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport” appointed by the AOT. The airport hotel is located in front of the passenger terminal complex with 300 meters in between. There are 600 rooms in the hotel, 500 of which have been opened at the initial phase. The hotel will be of recognized international standard with complete lines of services, along with a connecting route linking the hotel itself to the car parking building. Transportation: Suvarnabhumi Airport is located in Samut Prakarn province, 30km east of Bangkok. Road access to the new airport is provided by a series of new highways connected to Bangkok's existing outer ring road. The main access road leads from the passenger terminal through the northern part of the site to the new Bangkok–Chonburi highway.
The construction of the City Airport Terminal in Makkasan and a 28.6 km high-speed rail link to the new airport started in July 2005 (and still under construction) will connect with the BTS Sukhumvit Line and MRT Blue Line at Phaya Thai and Phetchaburi stations respectively, offering airport-bound passengers a fast 15-minute limited stop journey from the city.
Currently there are relatively few options for travelling to Bangkok's new domestic and international airport - Suvarnabhumi. In fact, for the first few years at least you have the simple choice, of either car, whether it be hotel, private or taxi or of course the bus.
Getting to the airport is simple enough and depending on time, should only take around 40 minutes to an hour from the centre of Bangkok, and around 1 1/2 hours from Pattaya.
There is an Airport Express Bus Service which operates to and from hotels, various stops of importance in the city, suburbs and the airport. Public Buses will also be available in central Bangkok from Min Buri - Banggkapi, Happy Land , Victory Monument , On Nut BTS Station, Samutprakarn and Rangsit.
Another service which travellers in other countries find extremely useful, the city check-in will also be a part of the new airport's services. This service, once established will allow passengers to check-in for their flights, luggage and all while still in the city.
So while, at the beginning at least, the options for getting to the airport - Suvarnabhumi - are limited, construction is already underway for a special train service. The train service is according to one official expected to be ready by 2008 and take roughly 20 minutes to get to the airport from the centre of Bangkok.
It is important to point out, and you may well have noticed, that details on transportation are still relatively sketchy and some aspects of the transport system etc would be under review as the airport goes live.
