The Monarchy
Thai people have a deep traditional reverence for the Royal Family, and a visitor should be careful to show respect for the King, the Queen and the Royal Children.
Religion
Visitors should dress neatly in all religious shrines. They should never go topless, or in shorts, hot pants or other unsuitable attire. It is acceptable to wear shoes when walking around the compound of a Buddhist temple, but not inside the chapel where the principal Buddha image is kept.
Each Buddha image, large or small, ruined or not, is regarded as a sacred object. Never climb onto one to take a photograph or do anything which might indicate a lack of respect. Buddhist monks are forbidden to touch or be touched by a woman, or to accept anything from the hand of one. If a woman has to give anything to a monk, she first hands it to a man, who then presents it.
Social Norms
Thais don’t normally shake hands when they greet one another, but instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a wai. Generally a younger person wais an elder, who returns it.
Thais regard the head as the highest part of the body, literally and figuratively. Therefore, avoid touching people on the head and try not to point your feet at people or an object. It is considered very rude. Shoes should be removed when entering a private Thai home.
Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned upon.

BEWARE OF TOUTS |
Touts are a notorious lot in Bangkok, especially in places where many tourists go. They can be quite aggressive, especially if you are alone. You are precisely their kind of target. They will try to get you to go with them to bars, massage parlors, or to a gem shop.
In fairness, they are just out to make a living. They are not out to rob you, at least not overtly. What the average tourist usually does not know is that they get a commission from places where the touts will take you. That means that the price you will pay in those establishments will be grossly inflated. Don't fall for it.
If the tout is being overly aggressive, simply ignore him and walk away. If the persists, do not lose your patience. Simply continue to ignore him as if he does not even exist, no matter what he says or does. He will soon tire of trying and move onto his next potential victim.
They also know that if they persist too much, then you can easily find a tourist police officer They do not want that kind of trouble.
Ignoring them is the best way to deal with them.

Streetwise-Friend or Foe?
|
Please be wary with people who claim they work for the ‘Tourist Bureau’ or something similar, and ask for a few minutes of your time to complete a questionnaire.
Strangers and racketeers are often selling time-share units or something akin, and if they manage to find out your name and where you are staying, persistent sales people will pester you for the rest of your stay.

You will probably be approached by children selling flowers. As appealing as the children look, by buying flowers from them or giving them money, you are actually making their situation worse, as you are encouraging this exploitation. The children do not benefit from the money.

Avoid dehydration – it can affect you quicker and more severely than you realize.
Be careful of sunburn – some common sense, particularly at the start of your holiday will help.
If walking on the beach away from the hotel, please not to carry or display valuables, wear revealing clothing or walk alone.
