Tropical Spas
Asia’s spa culture is rich, magnificent and full of colour. Nowhere else in the world will find so many powders, resins, seeds, twigs, dried and fresh thing to flavour your treatments; nowhere will you encounter such an exotic range of fragrances, as to make a spa pilgrimage to the East unforgettable.
The beauty of the tropical Asian spa is found in part in its variety, from family style spas set in humble dwellings and offering traditional treatments made with locally grown ingredients, to astounding structures built alongside luxury hotels and resorts. Some proudly overlook rushing rivers and oceans, while others can be found in hidden laneways behind bustling markets. Whatever your preference, there will be always spa in Thailand that suits it. |

Day Spas
The concept of the Day Spa is believed to date back as far as the second century, when ancient Romans bathed in thermal water for health and rejuvenation. The bathing ‘spa’ culture in Asia also has a vibrant history. In Japan, the first public bathhouse, or ‘sento’, is thought to have appeared in 1266. Flash-forward today: in Thailand alone there are over 490 registered Day Spas attracting over three million people each year.

Medical / Wellness Retreats
Medical tourism is now the fastest growing market in the global spa culture. Believed to be driven primary by today’s baby boomers whose biggest concerns are healthy aging and longevity, the medical spa is proving itself a model for the future of medicine. And this is where Asia leads the way. Several years ago, Chiva Som International Resort put Southeast Asia on the map as one of the world’s best health destination; the rest is history.
Imagine this: You awaken, and take in the view of a pristine ocean. A nurse (who is also a qualified nutritionist) delivers your organic breakfast. In a few hours you will undergo the most serious operation of your life – but beforehand, medical doctors have advised that you take a one-hour massage and spend some time at the spa, in the water therapy area. Afterwards, you will undergo several days of post-operative services including acupuncture, plus a regime of organic herbal supplements to aid the recovery process. Cooking and yoga classes are also part of your new preventative programme. |
